Independence Day is much more than a national celebration. For children, it is an opportunity to discover what our country means to them through colours, stories, activities, music, creativity and togetherness.
At Sky Kids Preschool & Daycare in Nagarbhavi, Bangalore, we believe that children understand important values best when they experience them. That is why, this Independence Day, we planned a special Independence Week from 10 August to 15 August 2026, filled with joyful activities designed especially for our little learners.
From preparing colourful food and dressing up in national colours to speaking about national symbols, dressing as freedom fighters and participating in a walkathon, every activity gave our children an opportunity to learn while having fun.
For us, the most beautiful part was seeing the excitement on their faces and the pride with which they participated.
Young children may not yet understand the complete history of India’s freedom struggle, but they can begin to understand simple values such as unity, courage, respect, responsibility and love for our country. Our Independence Week activities were planned to introduce these ideas in an age-appropriate and enjoyable way.

Each activity had a learning purpose behind the fun.
We began our Independence Week with a delicious and creative Tri-Colour Food Day. Children brought colourful and healthy food items inspired by the three colours of the Indian flag. Parents and children got creative with ingredients such as carrot, spinach and coconut, while some prepared colourful pasta, idlis and other interesting combinations.
The activity was not simply about making food look colourful. It helped children connect the familiar colours they see every day with the colours of our national flag.
Food-based activities can be especially engaging for preschool children because they involve something they already enjoy.
Through Tri-Colour Food Day, children explored:
It was wonderful to see how creatively our little ones and their parents presented their food. Some lunch boxes became tiny works of art! More importantly, children began understanding that learning doesn’t always happen with books and worksheets. Sometimes, it can happen around a lunch box too.
The following day brought a burst of colour to Sky Kids. For Tri-Colour Dress Day, children came dressed in saffron, white, green or blue, creating a cheerful and colourful atmosphere throughout the preschool.
But there was another important part of the activity. Each child brought a cutout representing a national symbol and spoke approximately 6 to 10 sentences about it. For a preschooler, standing in front of classmates and speaking can be a big achievement.
At Sky Kids, we understand that public speaking confidence doesn’t appear overnight. It develops through small opportunities where children are encouraged to speak, express themselves and feel comfortable being heard.
The activity helped children practise:
Some children may have spoken confidently from the beginning, while others may have needed a little encouragement. And that’s perfectly okay. Our aim was not to expect perfection. It was to give every child a safe opportunity to try. That small step of standing in front of friends and saying a few sentences can become the foundation for greater confidence as they grow.
At this age, children learn through experiences. When children participate in a celebration rather than simply watching it, they become active learners. They touch, create, speak, move, observe and interact with others. An Independence Day celebration can therefore become an opportunity to develop several early childhood skills at the same time.
Group celebrations encourage children to participate with their classmates, wait for their turn and appreciate what others are doing.
Speaking about a national symbol gives children a simple reason to practise expressing their thoughts.
Food arrangements, costumes, cutouts and decorations allow children to use their imagination.
Standing in front of classmates and participating in activities encourages children to become more comfortable expressing themselves.
Celebrating national occasions together helps children understand that they are part of a larger community.
After a week filled with learning, creativity and excitement, our Independence Week reached its grand finale on 15 August 2026. The school grounds came alive as our little ones dressed up as freedom fighters and national symbols.
For children, fancy dress is always exciting. But when the costumes are connected to India’s history and identity, the experience becomes even more meaningful. Seeing our little learners dressed up and confidently participating was a proud moment for our teachers and families.
Freedom fighters represent qualities that are valuable for children to learn from—courage, determination, responsibility and standing up for what is right.
At the preschool level, we don’t need to make history complicated. Simple stories and age-appropriate conversations can help children understand that many people worked hard for the freedom we enjoy today. The grand finale gave children a chance to celebrate these inspiring stories through their own little performances and costumes.
The Independence Day celebration continued with a school walkathon, bringing children, teachers and the school community together in a joyful display of unity and national pride. For young children, a walkathon is not about competition or speed. It is about participation.

Watching our children walk together, filled with enthusiasm, was a beautiful reminder that even the smallest steps can carry a big message.
A celebration becomes meaningful when children take something away from it. Our Independence Week was designed to help children experience important values in simple, memorable ways.
They learned about the colours of our flag through food and clothing. They developed confidence through speaking. They discovered national symbols through creative activities. They experienced teamwork during group celebrations and the walkathon. Most importantly, they experienced the happiness of celebrating something together.
By the end of the week, our little learners had opportunities to practise:
Behind every beautifully prepared tri-colour lunch box, carefully selected costume and national-symbol cutout, there was a parent helping a child prepare. We truly appreciate the effort our parents put into making Independence Week special. For young children, parental involvement sends a powerful message: “What you are learning matters to us too.”
These small moments choosing a costume, preparing food together, practising a few sentences or creating a cutout, can become meaningful childhood memories. And years later, children may not remember every detail of the activity, but they may remember how excited they felt celebrating with their family and friends.

From colourful food on 10 August to the vibrant dress-up celebration on 11 August and the grand finale on 15 August, Independence Week was filled with smiles, creativity, learning and togetherness. Our little ones may be small, but their enthusiasm was anything but small.
Every sentence they spoke, every costume they wore, every colourful food item they brought and every step they took during the walkathon added something special to our celebration. As we celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day, we are proud to see our children growing not only as young learners but also as confident, caring and responsible members of our community.
